California Screaming

I wanted to visit the San Andreas Fault once,

but when I got there it was closed.

Aerosmith’s lyrics may or may not stand as poetry without electric instruments  backing up the words. Here is one of my favorite songs with lyrics and links for your perusal.
The tribute video is interesting in itself.
The brooding notes at the onset of the song remind me of the last lines of Poe’s The City in the Sea:

But lo, a stir is in the air!
The wave — there is a movement there!

As if the towers had thrust aside,
In slightly sinking, the dull tide —
As if their tops had feebly given
A void within the filmy Heaven.
The waves have now a redder glow —
The hours are breathing faint and low —
And when, amid no earthly moans,
Down, down that town shall settle hence,
Hell, rising from a thousand thrones,
Shall do it reverence.

There are so many diverging sub-texts in this harrowing song. Seismologic/apocalyptic panic is the dominant theme – but one can find Creation vs. the Evolutionary hypothesis (Three million years or just a story), and the apostasy of Israel’s false prophets as mentioned in Isaiah 28:7 & 8 :

“And these also reel with wine and stagger from strong drink:
The priest and the prophet reel with strong drink,
         They are confused by wine, they stagger from strong drink;
         They reel while having visions…”

We even catch a bloody glimpse of the Levite’s butchered concubine from Judges.
OK all you armchair theologians – tell me if this song lines up with God’s prophetic Word or not… for years I tried to figure out the lyrics  by the way they sounded – but the internet has deprived me of that joy and I now know that in verse 5, “Holy lands are sinking / Bursting through the sky” is not QUITE what Brad W. and Steven T. had written.
The song is full of disturbing imagery nonetheless (just like the Bible).

So sleep well everyone and I’ll see you at the great white throne –
or maybe in the psych ward…

Nobody’s Fault

Aerosmith (1976)

Lord I must be dreaming / what else could this be ?
Everybody’s screaming / running’ for the sea
Holy lands are sinking
/ birds take to the sky
The prophets are all stinking drunk  / I know the reason why
Eyes are full of desire
/ mind is so ill at ease
Everything is on fire / shit piled up to the knees
Out of rhyme or reason, everyone’s to blame
Children of the season, don’t be lame

Sorry, you’re so sorry, don’t be sorry
Man has known and now he’s blown it
Upside down and hell’s the only sound
We did an awful job and now they say it’s nobody’s fault…
Old St. Andreas /
seven years ago
Shove it up their richters / red lines stop and go
Noblemen of courage / listen with their ears
Spoke but how discouraging when no one really hears…
One of these days you’ll be sorry
/ too many houses on the stilt
Three million years or just a story  / four on the floor up to the hilt
Out of rhyme or reason
, everyone’s to blame
Children of the season, don’t be lame

Sorry, you’re so sorry, don’t be sorry…
Man has known and now he’s blown it
Upside down and hell’s the only sound
We did an awful job and now we’re just a little too late…

Eyes are full of desire / mind is so ill at ease
Everything is on fire / shit piled up in debris
California showtime
/ five o’clock’s the news
Everybody’s concubine was going to take a snooze
Sorry, we’re so sorry
, don’t be sorry
Man has known and now he’s blown it
Upside down and hell’s the only sound
We did an awful job and now we’re just a little too late…

And don’t forget to look for poetry in Rock’n’Roll lyrics
as well as in the Holy Bible...

Bob Dylan once explained that many of the things he had “written” he felt that he had not actually written but that some kind of inspiration flowed through him and that he was only the one being used as a kind of conduit: “It’s Alright, Ma, I’m Only Bleeding,” for example.

Others have also talked about this phenomenon, some like their pens could barely keep up with the words that were flowing through them: George Matheson’s “O Love That Will Not Let me Go,” and Don McClean’s “American Pie” come to mind. Cranking out lyrics in these cases was not difficult or time consuming, or a tedium of human effort. I avoided much of rock ‘n roll after I met God, so this song is brand new to me and it might just fall into this other-worldly inspired category. I’ve often wondered about where Mick Jaggar’s “Sympathy For the Devil” (“May I please introduce myself, I’m a man of wealth and taste…”) came from. If there is truly “no new thing under the sun” then whatever comes our way must be at best a rehash of something that already exists. I believe that a God Who is not religiously “Christian” will use many methods (even the devil’s rock ‘n roll) to reach out to His created children, while using methods unconventional or perhaps even “blasphemous;” just look at what Jesus was accused of being and doing. Not saying that these songs should be considered on the same level as Scripture or that they are even 100% inspired but they can awaken the mind and perhaps lead one to a higher way.

“And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon…” -Revelation 5:4

“And judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter. Yea, truth faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey: and the LORD saw it, and it displeased Him that there was no judgment. And He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore His arm brought salvation unto Him [him?]; and His righteousness, it sustained him…According to their deeds, accordingly He will repay, fury to His adversaries, recompense to His enemies…So shall they fear the Name of the Lord from the west, and His glory from the rising of the sun…” -Isaiah 59

Rock stars and troubadours may turn out to be unwitting (even willing) mediums of the fallen angel himself. But Truth remains true forever.
The scriptures you posted here are worth more than all the lyrics ever penned.
(They also rock harder !) Thank you for commenting.

I’m playing around with the idea that there might be some kind of muse-like spirit in between divine inspiration and being “mediums of the fallen angel himself” that inspires without actually being 100% in the positive or negative category. Maybe the Lord uses lesser means to reach us, the saved and unsaved, that we can receive when the absolute truth might be more than we can bear. I’ll dig up an old poem for you that kept me going before I met God/Jesus.
