y ahora no recuerdo si eran uvas o niñas

In Granada,  Granada the city of my homeland
that has a great and mighty lake, oceanic in its churning
and Indian populations, and volcanoes ridged and grand
there, when I was a still a child, began my song and yearning.
There, when I was still a child, I glimpsed the vine-bred pearls
I touched the ripened clusters, felt my first great pain
and now I can’t recall if it was the grapes or the girls
or just one girl alone who awakened love’s refrain.
Hidden nightly readings of those verses by Dario
forbidden perusals of the sacred Song of Songs
and little love-notes written in my bed, Dios mio
sleepless, on the verge of tears, the insomniac longs
Then – I was a poet.  Books merged with every scene
Words and deeds I joined together in my lyrical art
and the girl – the actual girl,  a princess bride yet unforeseen,
was a vine-child in Granada in the Zion of my heart.
